This question is from the reading guide:

The references to Kitty stealing Esme’s jacket and the image of Esme holding on to baby Hugo are introduced early to distract the reader from the true secret of this story. When did you figure out what it was that Kitty really took from Esme? How did it affect your opinion of Kitty? Do you feel sympathy for her? Why or why not?

I thought that was so cleverly done, the whole baby Hugo thing. I really thought that it was that baby they spoke of, not any other one. I think I first realized something was up when Esme stares so intently at the photograph of Iris's dad, that caught my attention.
I already didn't like Kitty, she was a bit of a coward and a snitch, but I wasn't too upset by her taking Esme's baby. I mean, otherwise, if she hadn't done it, where would the baby have gone? Esme would not have been allowed to keep it. I felt a touch of sympathy for Kitty then, but not enough to redeem her in my eyes.

I'm going to too, but I read this a few months ago, and now can't find the copy to re-read. Add to that a young child, two very elderly and now bad-health-prone in-laws and an ill husband + holidays means I'm a bit busy. 8/
To be honest, I never linked the stealing of the jacket to the stealing of the child. I don't even remember the jacket thing, but, as I said, it's been a few months. 8) I do know I read this quickly, with half a brain, so obviously I missed a few things. I thought it was better to not comment than to give you non-information, but whew! Blew that one. 8)
